Alfred Packer and the Remains of his Victims In the winter of 1874, Alfred Packer was hired to lead a group of prospectors through the San Juan Mountains from the winter campsite of Chief Ouray located near the present-day Delta, Colorado. Packer led five men on a deadly trek into the snowy Colorado mountains, a trip from which none of them would return. Alfred Griner Packer was a prospector and guide in the Rocky Mountains during the 1870s who confessed to cannibalism during the winter of 1874. Alferd Packer is one of the few people in the US to ever be jailed for cannibalism, having allegedly killed and eaten five of his travelling companions. In 1967, University of Colorado students decided to name their new dining hall after Colorados most famous cannibal, Alferd Packer, coining the slogan.
